First of all, please allow me to apologize for not updating my blog sooner. I've just been super ~~lazy~~ busy. That and my slowly dying laptop kept me away from updating more frequently. Thought I'd share a few random pics from last week to celebrate my return from hibernation.

Kicked off last week with a delicious breakfast at Gérard Café , Al Qasba and a stroll around the corniche in Sharjah. I'm not a big fan of the cold but my friend loves it.

If you follow me on twitter, you must have read my tweet about my latest addiction. Yes, I just can't stop myself from snacking on sunflower seeds.

Kaleidoscopic Bookworm and I have formed a Sharjah based women's book club and our first meeting on the 31st of this month. The club's first selection was The Help and I finally managed to finish the book this week. To find out more, follow us on twitter @Albarzeh

Although I wasn't able to go out much this week, I did meet a friend over breakfast on Thursday. Saladicious is quite easily one of my favourite places for breakfast in Dubai.

My friend and I then burned our breakfast by taking a walk at Al Safa Park. Beautiful weather and lots of gossip while we shed a few calories.

I got two of these purity bottles from Index Living at Dubai Mall. I've wanted them for the longest of time and I really love them!

This is the book I'm reading at the moment. Loving it so far.

As a die-hard lover and wannabe collector of cool t-shirts, these tees recently caught my eye and what really got my attention was the fact that they are by a new local brand.

Imagine if you could get books for free and unlike a library, you wouldn't have to return them!

That's exactly what The Book Shelter promises to do. This virtual book sharing library, founded by two Emirati girls, is giving out free books to anyone who asks for them and won't even burden you with shipping costs..they'll take care of it.

Sounds too good to be true...doesn't it? I had the same reaction, so decided to find out more.

What made you start something like this?

A book to us is not just paper glued together..every book represents a life, a story, its someone's voice and thoughts. It breaks our hearts to see books being thrown away or collecting dust somewhere. So we decided to rescue them.

The Book Shelter is where we house unloved books and try to give them a new life.

What do you want to achieve with The Book Shelter?

In this age of gadgets the relationship between people and books has been compromised. We are not just making books accessible to people, we are placing them right into their hands.

We aim to promote reading, and in the near future, create a sustainable reading culture that relies on itself. By circulating pre-owned books we want to develop a responsible community that recycles.

When did you begin, and how's the response so far?

Actually, we started the project back in 2006. At the time we were "Writer's Block"; a writer's hub where writers submitted their work and received feedback. We wanted our contributors to read so we started this concept on the side (accepting book donations and giving them out for free).

It went on for a year, it was very successful but we shut it down for personal reasons. We revived the project a month ago and renamed it to The Book Shelter because we decided to concentrate on promoting reading.

The response in one month has been far better than our response in 2006, mainly because social media has made it easier for us to reach people. Also, we were lucky to participate in an event to put ourselves "out there" right from the start. The frequent response we get from people is "whats the catch?" or "this is too good to be true" "so you are basically giving out free books?" :)

What kinds of books do you enjoy reading yourselves? How often do you read?

We both like children's books and fantasy a lot. But we experiment with different genres and recommend books to each other all the time. We read books in English, French and Arabic. But because we like the same kind of books we always end up "stealing" each others books or fighting over the last copy at some book stand lol.

We collect books in our travels, charity events that sell books, flea markets, online, we even try to haggle with stores that display books as part of their decoration. Sometimes we have multiple copies of the same book but by different publishers (different covers)...we love vintage books, the older the better!

And to get us to lose interest in a book, just tell us its a "bestseller" .. mainly because we really just like to make up our own minds about books.

We are book lovers and try read all the time, there is always a book in our purse when we go out !

Favourite book/authors?

We have the same list of favorite books and authors: Arabian Nights by Husain Haddaway, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, The Secret Garden , Narnia Chronicles.
Roald Dahl books really hooked us into reading and One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of our biggest writing inspirations....it's hard to choose one book..our list goes on.. !

Tried & Tested: Shiffa

L-R: Aromatic Facial Cleanser | Skin Balancing Toner | Tamanu Moisturising Cream

A couple of months ago, I had blogged about Shiffa (see post: here) and it has been exactly 2 months since I've been using the three products and all three containers are almost empty. I thought I'd give my readers an update.

Aromatic Facial Cleanser:

"Sweet rosy oil of geranium & grapefruit to cleanse, balance and uplift your skin. Ancient healing chamomile to calm, purify, & soothe. Anti bacterial tea tree & avocado to condition & moisturise skin Miraculous fruits of the olive tree leaving skin soft, supple & moisturised."

Like all Shiffa products the cleanser is made of natural, organic ingredients and isn't harsh on the skin. But admittedly I sometimes have to use it twice to get all the excess makeup off. I would recommend it to anyone with sensitive skin. I'm not a fan of cleansing lotions, but this one didn't leave my skin feeling oily which I really liked!

Skin Balancing Toner:

"Cooling aloe vera to soothe. Italian bergamot to restore balance. Refreshing Damask rose. Mineral-rich seaweed to help eliminate impurities and repair. Bergamot to relax. Stimulating hazel to bring new skin to life."

Again, very gentle, extremely healing. I had to be careful not to use too much of this because it left my skin looking a little oily, but if you're careful and use it in small amounts it's a great product!

Tamanu Moisturising Cream:

"Healing & regenerating powerful aromatic tamanu plant oil. Aromatic rosemary to rejuvenate. Chilean rosehip oil to moisturise and smooth skin. Nourishing jojoba to soften. Jasmine to tone, firm and refine. Anti-ageing avocado oil. Delicate calendula plant to protect and defend against environment damage."

When I had visited the Shiffa Express Spa (see post: here) at Sephora, Dubai Mall, the therapist was extremely confident and excited about this cream. I could tell she firmly believed in its properties, and quite frankly I have fallen in love with it! It makes my skin soft, deeply moisturized and it feels well looked after! As it is very rich, a small amount goes a long way and on those days when I want to give my skin a little extra TLC, I apply it generously on my face and neck before going to bed, and in the morning the skin feels supple and smooth!

My sister also gave the three products a go and she loved them! She used it at night before going to bed and after a long day in the office, she felt her skin feeling supple and rejuvenated. I am looking forward to buying all three products again once I completely run out of them.

The 30th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair recently came to an end and luckily, I was able to attend the fair on its second day. I was actually there for a couple of talks given by visiting authors, and only had half an hour or so to browse through the great amounts of books that were on exhibit and sale.

I was able to get a few good reads for myself, and among the books I bought, was this tiny book called Keep Calm for Ladies. As I was browsing through the piles and piles of books on exhibit, this particular book's cute cover design similar to the now infamous 'Keep Calm and Carry On' wartime posters, caught my eye and I couldn't resist buying it!

It is filled with various quotes on various topics by inspirational women.

I recently dreamt I was in a beautiful forest covered in a thick blanket of snow. In my dream I saw a wolf, an owl, a polar bear, a fox and even a reindeer. Thank God it was only a dream as the reindeer chased me until I ran back indoors.

My Gorgeous Sotra Dress!!!

I was so excited when FedEx called to tell me that my package from Jeddah had finally arrived! I couldn't wait for them to bring it home because I was literally dying to try on the dress that the lovely ladies at Sotra had sent me!!

I was actually asked to pick something from Sotra's facebook group (click HERE) and I fell in love with this silk organza, ivory coloured dress from their S/S 2011 collection. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the gorgeous bib necklace that they sent along with the dress! I wasn't even expecting that...so THANK YOU SOTRA! I am now impatiently waiting for the right occasion to wear this dress on! I REALLY LOVE IT!! and everyone in my family's been telling me how beautiful it looks on me! ;)

As much as I loved their S/S collection, Sotra's A/W 2011 collection is looking even better!!!

I was recently invited to Shiffa's Express Spa located in Sephora, The Dubai Mall.

Once the door was closed I actually forgot I was in the middle of a busy mall, and once the soothing music went on, and the treatment started I felt completely relaxed...so much so that I think I actually drifted into sleep for a few minutes.

The lovely therapist Boushra, who has close to 17 years of experience, chose the treatment called Face Time for me. She used the Shiffa products to cleanse & tone my skin and then massaged my face and the area around my eyes. After the relaxing facial that lasted 20 minutes, she made a diagnosis on the condition of my skim and made recommendations on which Shiffa products would be the most suitable for me.

Apart from the Face Time treatment, the spa also offers Heavenly Hands, Foot Revival and Precious Minds. Each one costs a 100 AED and lasts up to 20 minutes.

I was actually really impressed by their service, and now, having used the Shiffa products on my skin for about two weeks (check them out HERE), I've have noticed feeling my skin really nourished! One more product that I was really impressed with is the Shiffa Healing Balm. Boushra had used it to massage my face and later told me it can be used on burns, on chapped lips, and more. She showed me how a little goes a long way, so one tub will last you ages!

Went to see Friends With Benefits with my sister. It was a Wednesday night in Sharjah, so we had the whole place to ourselves.

Internet connection at home isn't working...so this has been a life saver!

Spotted these doorknobs at ZARA Home <3 When I get married, I'm soooo getting things from there for my home!

I'm addicted to Burger King! I've been having it on most night these past 2 weeks...but it HAS to stop! I have to get back into shape by November 17th! That's when the Versace x H&M collection hits the shops!!!!

Need a camera! I've been borrowing my sister's camera for a while, and now she is refusing to lend it to me ever again! -_-

*Sigh* That trench coat with a bow printed on it...isn't that just perfect? I apologize for the image heavy post, but I wanted to include the pics of all my favourite pieces from the collection. Love how the bows, florals and lace look feminine without the unnecessary froufrou. Most of the pieces are feminine, yet maintain a certain amount of edge...giving them a modern feel. Having said that, some of the pieces like the black and pink lacey dresses have such a timeless appeal!

I recently had the chance to try out the restaurant Le Pain Quotidien in The Dubai Mall. In the middle of a busy mall on a Friday, this was one of the quietest places to sit and catch up with a friend. Anyway, I was happy to find out that the restaurant serves organic food, and the dishes are very reasonably priced.

The almond meringue I had was simply too big and too sweet! But I loved how my hot chocolate (in soymilk of course!) was served in a bowl...that was a lotta fun! Seems like an ideal place fore breakfast or lunch.

On Tuesday, September 20th, a few of us bloggers from the UAE were invited to a bloggers' event hosted by TRESemmé at the Westin Hotel in Dubai.

Raymond Moussan of Moussan Beauty Salon, Dubai was there to introduce us to some of TRESemmé's products and their proper/effective usage. Using the same products, Raymond also created a beautiful soft, up do on Tanya Burr's hair while giving us styling and hair care tips. This was later followed by a Q&A session with him. I loved how we were all able to discuss our hair problems with Raymond and he was very helpful too!

Overall, it was a really nice evening. I was so happy that I got to meet Tanya Burr who had especially come to Dubai for the event! You may know her as pixi2woo from her youtube makeup tutorials...I am a huge fan! You can imagine how I must have felt when she said she liked my make up. She even asked me which shade of lipstick I had on and was nice enough to pose for pics with us!

Apart from that, the food was great, I got to meet a lotta amazing bloggers and we even got goody bags full of TRESemmé products along with great tips on how to use them! God knows my hair can use some TLC!

I haven't tried these yet, but I'll write a review on them after a while.

I've had these Shiffa products for a few months now (courtesy of Dubai Confidential) but I've only just found the opportunity to use them for the first time. Quite frankly I hadn't even heard of Shiffa before but I'm so happy I got to try their luxurious products. The packaging is really nice, and the products come in beautiful containers.

Shiffa, literally means 'healing' or 'to heal' in Arabic and that is the philosophy behind the skin care products. They claim to use only the best, most luxurious, organic ingredients to make their products such as the Iranian rose, South East Asian tamanu, Indian amber, Egyptian jasmine, Lebanese orange blossom and African shea butter, etc. Shiffa products are used worldwide at numerous spas.

The cleanser and toner left my skin feeling really soft and clean and they smell divine. I initially found the tamanu cream a little heavy for my skin type but after a while it gets fully absorbed leaving the skin feeling really nourished. I've only used the products a couple of times but I'm excited to see the results after a month or so. As they are a little pricey I'm going to start by using them every night before bed. Will let you know how it goes.

Clothing Line Inspired by Gossip Girl

Warner Bros has collaborated with Romeo & Juliet Couture to come up with a clothing line inspired by Gossip Girl's iconic characters Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen.

The collection will be launched on September 26th and will coincide with show's season 5 premier.

The debut range will include some basics from Blair and Serena's wardrobes including pleated skirts, skinny jeans, ruffled chiffon party dresses and printed tees. Handbags and accessories will be introduced next season.

The clothes will cost between $80 to $200 and will be available at Neiman Marcus, Saks, etc.

Quite frankly, I'm not really fond of such clothing lines myself. I rather wear the original things that Blair and Serena wear. The "inspired" clothes never really has the same effect.

Loving Anne Hathaway's look in the movie One Day. The movie shows the relationship between two friends over the period of twenty years or so. During that time, Anne's character Emma's appearance also evolves. From the perm in the 1980's to the long, sleek hair she is shown to have mid film to the chic crop towards the end. Anne looks stunning throughout the film...yes! even with the huge glasses and perm she sports at one time.

Haven't seen the film yet...might catch it sometime this week.

Loving these paintings by American artist Kelly Reemtsen. I can't help but think of these headless figures as frustrated housewives of the 1950's who had to keep up appearances in front of society, making sure their houses, children and husbands were looked after while appearing happy and cheerful doing so. But how they felt must have been quite contradictory to their outward appearances. Perhaps that frustration even led some of them to do something drastic!

Love the dresses these anonymous women are wearing. Love the colours, the vintage style of the clothes and I love how they are carrying those dangerous tools in their pretty hands, waiting to do some serious damage!

The Gulf News had recently published an article mentioning the 24 year old Yusra who has been suffering from a neuromuscular disease since birth, and for the last eleven years she has been on a life support machine - being able to breathe only with the help of a ventilator. She can't talk, nor can she move her body except for her fingers.

One would imagine her to pass her time sleeping, or being taken care of by others. But instead, the amazing Yusra likes to always dress nicely and has recently completed her International Baccalaureate with an 81.9 percentage from the confines of her hospital bed and is now planning on obtaining a higher education. Being unable to speak or move, her two means of communications are her laptop and blackberry.

I love posting quotes by beautiful women on my blog, that's why I felt Yusra deserves a mention. The above quote wasn't even spoken by Yusra, but typed by her on her laptop. I was really moved by Yusra's determination to improve her life and had I been in her place, I would have most definitely given up. I need to remind myself of Yusra every time I'm feeling down...if she can smile and still think life is a blessing in spite of all that she is going through...I should surely be able to do the same.

I can't stop daydreaming about having a fountain in my living room.
After we get married, my fiance and I plan on moving into an apartment, but in spite of that, I'm determined to install an outdoor garden fountain in my living room or dining area. I know there are fountains that are designed for the indoors, but most of them are silly looking if you ask me. I also hope to keep a goldfish or two in it and I'm hoping they survive!

Browsing around amazon.com I came across these fountains above. Most of them are lightweight and not too big in size. And they aren't very expensive either. I want something similar ^_^

Be Fearless: Think Up Launching Today!

Just wanted to wish the Think Up team for their launch later today (Sunday, 4th September 2011).

Think Up's founder Saleh Al Braik had come up with the idea of creating a virtual social hub, providing the youth of the UAE and other GCC countries with a platform to showcase their various talents. Apart from that, the Think Up team is also planning on mobilizing the youth to do charity work, helping them make a real difference in society.

In preparation for the launch, Saleh and his team have been busy interviewing a lot of talented people including film makers, entrepreneurs, authors etc who they think will be able to inspire the youth of the GCC even more. With time, the interviews will be posted on their website.

Qatari fashion brand Toujouri recently released a sneak peek of their A/W11 collection and I just had to blog about it. I love regional designers and brands and I am a big fan of Toujouri.

What I like about this collection is the rich colours like the deep purple, crimson and also the sequin and beading details. As for my favourite piece, that has to be the embellished jacket (above). A close second is the saffron dress with the royal beading on the sleeve. I love the silhouette and the eye-catching colour.

It's like how we tend to sit with our back straight when wearing something nice, or walk with more confidence in a pair of new shoes. Don't you think we all pout a little more when wearing lipstick? Or how a man acts more sophisticated in a well fitting suit. Sometimes we do that without even realizing it, we naturally come into character.

The story has been shot by Steven Meisel and features models like Linda Evangelista (who is known for being a bit of a chameleon), Raquel Zimmermann and Jessica Stam. The styling is gorgeous and the make up and hair transformations inspirational.

The Sosia (which means 'double' in Italian) has been designed by Emanuele Magini for the Italian brand Campeggi. Magini's take on the sofa-bed can be used as two armchairs than can be arranged in more than one way with the possibility of turning into a single bed that offers some privacy to the person sleeping in it...sort of like a small sleeping cabin.

Half the charm of the TV show Mad Men for me is how good it looks. The interiors and the clothes are just dreamy and reminiscent of an era when both men and women looked polished and properly put together.

Fashion For A Good Cause: nawá

Nawá is a social project aiming to bring sustainable improvements in the quality of life of poorer communities around the world, starting from designer Nadine Mezher's hometown just south of Beirut (Lebanon). Nadine who launched the project this summer, aims to do this by producing high-end luxury fashion goods that have been inspired by the culture of the community producing it. The profits will be put towards building the required facilities and developing the skills of the people so that community can then manufacture similar items themselves, earn a living and eventually improve the quality of their lives.

Nawá's first creation is this beautiful bag aptly named "The Tree of Life". I love the use of embroidered jute on these leather bags, giving it a real crafty, artistic feel. In keeping with the high-end standards, the bag's chain and logo are plated in gold and is made of the highest quality of materials. I simply love how it looks and I'm really, really hoping to get one.

Peaches Footwear

Peaches is an new brand launched by three Emirati girls, specializing in footwear. Their debut collection consists of these cute flats (my favourites) and they have their eyes set on becoming one of UAE's biggest brands. I wish them luck!

The shoes are very reasonably priced. The ones with the bows are for only 150 AED, the spikes for 200 AED each, while the ones with the leopard print are for 300 AED.
